Around October 2009
I decided to get a new residential boat.
It would be a 45' long steel narrowboat without an engine, a butty, to be correct.
I would need to fit it out myself, and no, I hadn't ever fitted out a boat before, we all start somewhere, and I did have some tools.
I made a list of what I did and did not need
and another list of what I could afford.
It could be fitted with windows and doors and painted, I would do the rest.
I drew my boat and asked 12 boatbuilders if they would like to build it for me.
Some didn't answer, some wrote one line,
£25,000.00 said one.
Colecraft sent me a price-list and a considered, businesslike reply, I detected a good deal of common-sense and interest, plus 35 years of boatbuilding experience, so off I went to Daventry to visit.
They appeared singularly unafraid of me and my drawings.......
